Product Info

ellaOne is a form of emergency contraception, otherwise known as the morning after pill. It is effective up to five days after the event of unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It contains the active ingredient ulipristal acetate, a synthetic form of progestogen. Though it is effective longer than Levonelle, it works in the same way to stop the process of ovulation and a fertilised egg imbedding itself to the lining of the womb.

How do you take it?

ellaOne is most effective - 98% - if it is taken within the first 24 hours after the contraceptive failure occurred, though you can take it up to five days after the event. It is important not to take more than one tablet per menstrual cycle. You should continue to use your regular contraception after you take the medication.

If you experience vomiting up to three hours after taking the morning after pill it may not have been effective and you should speak to your doctor to get another one.

What are the benefits of ellaOne?

ellaOne can help to prevent pregnancy up to five days after unprotected sex, which is longer by two days than the other morning after pill, Levonelle. It is not a long-term medication and therefore the risk of side effects is relatively low.

Are there any side effects?

Most women who take ellaOne 30mg do not experience any side effects at all. However, there is always a small risk with these types of medication. Side effects are usually mild and do not last for very long, but could include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dizziness, pelvic pain, tiredness, back pain, painful periods and breast tenderness. Rarer side effects could include experiencing bladder pain, toothache, hives, nose bleeds, genital itching or nose and throat congestion.

If you experience a severe reaction to this medication you should seek medical treatment immediately.

Can anyone take ellaOne?

Most women will be able to take the ellaOne pill safely, however there are some medical conditions and medications incompatible with this treatment. You should not take the medication if you are allergic to the active ingredient ulipristal acetate. Medications that may affect the ellaOne pill are HIV medicines (such as ritonavir), epilepsy medications (such as Phenobarbital, phenytoin and carbamazepine) or treatments for stomach ulcers. You should make sure that you disclose any other medications you are taking during your consultation.

ellaOne is only designed to be used in an emergency and should not be taken as a method of regular contraception. You should not take the ellaOne pill more than once during a menstrual cycle.
